The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Michigan is the state’s oldest and largest full-service construction association providing services to Michigan's leading general contractors, construction managers, specialty contractors and related construction industry companies. The AGC is seeking to hire a labor relations professional to serve as its Director of Labor Relations. The association is a state affiliate of Washington DC-based Associated General Contractors of America. The Labor Relations Division is a separate, autonomous division of the association with separate bylaws and leadership. 
 
The Position
The Director of Labor Relations will be responsible for coordination of high level collective bargaining efforts across numerous construction crafts. This role will require creating and maintaining strong industry relationships while representing the AGC and member companies in a professional manner. Our ideal candidate will possess a strong personality with leadership characteristics and excellent communication skills.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Supervise day-to-day activities of the Labor Relations Division staff.
  • Organize and coordinate collective bargaining with multiple unions from six different construction crafts.
  • Organize and coordinate collective bargaining efforts for four other associations with multiple unions from four different construction crafts.
  • Administer collective bargaining agreements (CBA) including grievance and arbitration procedures and hearings.
  • Assist employers in the interpretation of language contained in specific CBAs.
  • Assess jobsite conditions to assist contractor members in decisions relating to harmony on a particular job.
  • Serve as an ERISA trustee on jointly administered multi-employer health care, pension and apprenticeship funds.
  • Oversee the appointment of all management trustees to these funds subject to approval by the LRD.
  • Serve as a management member and advisor on numerous labor/management committees.
  • Monitor events in the industry, including legal and regulatory developments, and report as required the effects or outcomes to contractors signatory to an AGC CBA.
  • Represent member companies in cases before the National Labor Relations Board or any other regulatory agency of the federal, state or local government.
  • Partner and collaborate with other construction associations to enhance industry relations and the collective bargaining process.
  • Negotiate special agreements or Project Labor Agreements (PLA) on behalf of member companies.
 
Desired Experience, Skills and Abilities
  1. Bachelor’s Degree
  2. Experience and in depth understanding of collective bargaining and employee benefits
  3. Experience in trade/industry association environment related to the construction industry
  4. Leadership characteristics and experience
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  6. Active and unrestricted driver’s license

Compensation, Benefits and Structure
The Director of Labor Relations position is salaried, exempt and will report directly to the association president (CEO). The starting salary is based on skills, abilities, experience, education and training and is competitive within the local and national market for Association directors. The Director of Labor Relations is eligible for the discretionary bonus plan and receives a vehicle allowance plus fuel expenses. The AGC of Michigan offers a complete insurance package including medical, dental, vision, life, Long Term Disability, and paid vacation and holidays.  Employees are eligible for the 401(k) retirement plan with a 5% employer match and a discretionary profit sharing plan.
