Art Gallery Associate

Main Street Gallery Leland in Leland, MI, has been a part of the Leelanau County community for over 35 years. The Gallery is home to a collection of fine art by both local and national artists as well as an immaculate sculpture garden on the Leland River. The Gallery focuses on cultivating opportunities for the artists, patrons and the community to share and celebrate fine art.   
The Position
The Gallery is hiring a part-time Art Gallery Associate to assist the Art Gallery Manager in successfully running the Gallery on a daily basis. This position focuses on creating a favorable customer experience through engaging interactions and sharing knowledge about both individual art pieces and the artists behind the creations.   
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, maintaining active knowledge of gallery displays, artists, mediums and related market information, opening and closing the Gallery, and managing the Gallery, in place of the Gallery Manager as necessary, maintaining and updating the Gallery’s social media platforms, answering incoming calls, handling cash and credit card payments, and helping to keep the Gallery presentable and tidy for visitors and guests.
This position is perfect for an art student or professional who is interested in expanding their artistic knowledge and career. Candidates must enjoy being a steward for guest’s journeys when visiting the Gallery and invest time in understanding and learning about featured artists.   
Targeted Experience, Skills, and Abilities
  • Background and interest in managing and selling gallery displays, including sculptures, oil and acrylic painting, watercolors and woodcarvings
  • Experience managing and running social media platforms and other marketing resources preferred 
  • Ability to engage guests with a high level of interpersonal skills
  • High level of accountability and trust
  • Interest and passion for art and building a career in the industry 
Compensation, Benefits, and Structure
The position is part-time, non-exempt and seasonal in nature, with primary work hours between the months of May and December. The pay range varies, depending on experience, skills, abilities, and length of service with the Gallery.
